We wanted to share an article we found on the BBC which outlines some of the most-asked questions about employee rights when it comes to snow days!
Snow days can be a lot of fun when you haven’t got to worry about getting your kids to school, getting to work, getting into trouble with your employer or sacrificing a days pay. Well we thought we would share this article from the BBC so that you can get the facts and hopefully move on to enjoying your day in the snow!
Be mindful as an employer
Aside from the legal requirements as an employer, you should also consider your moral obligations on these days. Whatever your legal requirements, you should also factor in how you will be regarded by your employees if you come down too hard. Some businesses NEED staff in order to operate and keep others safe, but for other employers, an unpaid day off, a work-from-home day or time off in lieu can be considered an acceptable solution.
We don’t want to be putting employees at risk on their commute, or leaving their children without child care, in favour of making an extra buck that day. Consider your options carefully and of course, make sure you always follow any legal expectations for your staff.
