workplace stress - managing a big workload

We wanted to just share an article we found on Forbes about reducing stress in the workplace, something which we believe is extremely prevalent in the current economy and fortunately, is something leaders and managers are now taking much more seriously.

Workplace stress has an impact on so many other things; productivity, absenteeism, employee satisfaction, customer experience and ultimately, company performance. Stress at work (and outside work!) is hard to avoid – everyone will feel stress at some point or another and that’s normal, but as leaders we need to think about working to reduce stress in our general workforce in as many ways as we can.

We are regularly approached by our clients asking us to build resilience building programmes for employees, a skill (if it can be named that) which is in increasing demand. When you think about it, why do employers suddenly need their teams to build more resilience? Probably because teams are under that much more pressure in the current economic climate and everyone is always battling the consequences of increased workplace stress.

Forbes have suggested 6 ways to reduce workplace stress in your employees;

1. Provide employees with relevant and thorough skills training

No matter which industry you work in, ensuring employees are suitable skilled to successfully fulfil their roles and maximise their performance will reduce the pressure and work-related stress they experience. Brightstone provide a whole range of skills training workshops if you could do with a boost somewhere.

2. Prepare for the unexpected – plan ahead!

Despite the essence of something being “unexpected”, a few contingency plans can go a long way! Get some plans in place for the unexpected rush, decline or change of direction and give employees confidence in you from the moment the unexpected happens!

3. Stay strong as a team

We don’t need to continuously repeat the benefits of building a strong, resilient and motivated team. Check out our team building events & workshops if you’d like a little help to boost your team performance!

4. Keep things scalable

It’s tempting to accept that big contract which comes in promising high revenues – but can you scale your business to suit? The pressure to meet the demands of a large project can create a lot of workplace stress – are you able to scale up to it?

5. Take care of your employees

Taking care of your employees also goes without saying really. Making sure employees know that you care about them and actually instill this as part of your company culture will go a long way to helping employees manage their own stress loads.

6. Take care of yourself too

Lead by example! Making sure you take care of yourself as a senior leader will give you the capacity to help your employees, as well as setting a good example for what levels of pressure are actually acceptable under your leadership.
